Kolkata: At least 25 people have been arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the RG Kar vandalism incident, Police Commissioner Vineet Goyel said on Friday.

He urged all citizens and all political parties to come up with information about the miscreants behind the vandalism. Goyel urged the media and the people to not pay heed to the rumour mongering which has been going on over the rape and murder of a PG medical student of the hospital and the vandalism incident. The Police Commissioner accepted that there was "failure of assessment" about the crowd size on the 'Reclaim the Night' which was meant to be peaceful. He said, "So many women and people had come from various parts of the city and it was difficult to assess the size of the crowd."

"If you call it a failure of assessment, yes it was. The entire protest was supposed to be peaceful. We are human beings. We also make assessments based on available resources. There was so much security in the location. ACP-I was also present," he said. " During the 'Reclaim the Night' protest, there were gatherings and spontaneous crowds which had come, with no specific leaders. How many people will gather could not be assessed. We had to deploy our resources throughout the city while a fairly large contingent had assembled at the RG Kar hospital," the Commissioner said.

"We had our force. DC North was present. He tried his best. Despite that the barricade was breached. Our 15 people were injured. DC North got hit by a stone and he was untraced for some time. The force got disorganised. Sending reinforcements was difficult as all the roads were crowded," Goyel said while talking about the day vandalism occurred in RG Kar Hospital.

"We have posted photos of people on our Facebook Page. We would like to request you to circulate the photos and urge the media and all political parties to provide information if they get anything," he said . He assured the seminar hall (the crime scene) was untouched.
