Ramachandra Rao, DGP of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation on Thursday, expressed shock and disappointment over his daughter Ranya Rao’s arrest by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai.

"Ranya got married to Jatin Hukkeri 4 months ago. She never came to our house after the marriage. We are completely unaware of her and her husband Jatin's business affairs. This has come as a complete shock and a matter of great disappointment and dismay for us," ANI quoted Rao as saying.

The senior police officer emphasised that if any violations have occurred, "the law will take its course."

Ranya was caught at Bengaluru airport on Monday night with 14.2 kg of gold concealed in a belt strapped to her body. Following her arrest, DRI officials raided her residence, seizing assets worth ?17.3 crore.

The investigation has now expanded to a luxury jewellery boutique in Bengaluru’s central business district. According to a TOI report, the gold found in Ranya’s apartment was sourced from a designer jewellery store on Lavelle Road. Officials are also probing possible political links and tracking payment methods used in the smuggling operation.
