A first-year MBBS student from a government medical college in Dungarpur, Rajasthan was forced to do more than 300 push-ups amid scorching heat. This impacted the student’s kidney functioning and he had to undergo dialysis.

An FIR has been lodged against seven second-year students. They have also been suspended. The college took action on Tuesday after it received a communication from the National Medical Commission (NMC) as the victim had filed a complaint with NMC’s anti-ragging cell. The incident had, however, taken place on May 15.

"The email by NMC was forwarded to the college's anti-ragging committee on June 22, which investigated the matter and confirmed the incident had taken place. Following SC guidelines and based on the recommendation of the anti-ragging committee, we filed an FIR against seven accused students," college principal Balamuruganvelu S told TOI.

The complaint reveals that the accused took the victim on a hilly spot outside the college campus and made him do push-ups in the heat, which resulted in severe dehydration. He was admitted to a hospital in Ahmedabad for seven days.

The accused have been booked under multiple IPC sections, including 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) based on the complaint.
