Rainfall Alert: Mumbai, Thane and Palghar to receive heavy showers for next 5 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for Mumbai and its neighboring districts, Thane and Palghar, as well as other parts of Maharashtra over the next four to five days starting Saturday, reported PTI. The IMD has issued an orange alert for these districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall.

"The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in some areas of Mumbai city and its suburbs in the next 3-4 hours. Citizens are advised to be cautious," stated an SMS alert from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday morning.

The orange alert covers Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts in the Konkan region. It signals heavy rainfall exceeding 64.5 mm in 24 hours, which could potentially disrupt normal life and cause flooding in low-lying areas.


Similarly, an orange alert has been issued for Pune and Satara districts in western Maharashtra, as well as Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts in Vidarbha for Saturday.

The IMD has further issued a yellow alert for Saturday in several other districts, which predicts thunderstorms with lightning, light-to-moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph speed. This alert excludes a few districts in western Maharashtra and Marathwada.

An orange alert is also in place for some districts in Konkan and western Maharashtra on August 25 and 26.

According to an IMD scientist, a low-pressure area over the northern parts of West Bengal and northeast Jharkhand, combined with another low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast, is expected to bring rain to most parts of Maharashtra in the next 48 hours.
