Rahul Gandhi questions FM Sitharaman
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asked Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman which "legal and commercial matter" required Tata Trusts and Tata Sons to be hosted at Home Minister Amit Shah's residence. He was replying to her criticism of his remarks on the Tata group.

In a post on X, Gandhi also asked when "crony number 1" will appear in the game and which pieces of Tata he will get. He did not name anyone.

He ended the post by saying "all India's businesses except 3-4 of your cronies, already hate all of you and don't need any incitement".

Sitharaman had earlier asked Gandhi to "refrain from politicising every issue". She said "casually labelling commercial and legal matters as criminal is unacceptable". She asked if he was trying to incite business leaders to join him in "spreading distrust and toxicity".

She said on X that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi values Indian industry as job creators and drivers of economic growth. Its policies, she said, are tailored to "enable enterprise, support industry and encourage investment".

She added that for decades Congress had held back Indian entrepreneurs under the "Licence-Quota Raj". She said the Constitution ensures justice to all citizens and the courts are entrusted with upholding it. "So Rahul ji, refrain from seeing ghosts everywhere," she said.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi had said on X that "Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word". He asked, "How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?" He also said "Indian business is not Modi and Shah's plaything" and "We will ensure justice for these crimes."

Tata Sons dispute

His remarks come amid a dispute over the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman of Tata Sons, according to ANI. Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata has objected to the move, citing procedural lapses.

In a letter dated October 26 to Tata Sons company secretary Suprakash Mukhopadhyay, Noel Tata called the resolution "void", ANI reported. He said no Selection Committee was formed under Article 118. He also said the affirmative vote of directors appointed under Article 104B, needed under Articles 118 and 121, was not obtained. PTI reported that the letter also challenges the reappointment beyond February 2027. The resolution was passed at the board meeting of September 17.

Noel Tata, Chandrasekaran, Tata Trusts vice chairman Venu Srinivasan and trustee Darius Khambata met Shah at his residence on October 7, 2025, according to a PTI report and that Sitharaman joined later in the evening. The meeting came amid infighting among Tata Trusts trustees over board appointments and governance issues.
