"Rahul was a total family man"
Everyone knew Rahul as an outstanding entrepreneur who built the two and three-wheeler industry in India. He gave mobility to millions of men and women. He created employment also for millions and huge wealth for the nation. His managerial capabilities resulted in the financial ratios of Bajaj Auto being amongst the best in class. His disregard for 'protocol' and being 'diplomatic' with those in power was unique amongst industrialists and businessmen. His love for India shone like a beacon. He was a born leader with great charisma.

In 1991 the Bombay Club incident made many criticise him for being against reforms. The critics completely misunderstood him. Being the nationalist that he was, he wanted Indian industry to grow and become competitive. But he was also a realist and knew ground realities. Rahul recognised that Indian manufacturers were greatly disadvantaged in comparison with those outside the country. Manufacturing in India was not only hard, but policies and practices had added unnecessary costs. It was only after 2014 that the government has been trying to make doing business easier and creating conditions for manufacturing to become competitive.

Rahul was a total family man. As the patriarch of the family, he considered it his duty to look after all. He was generous and understanding. He never imposed his will arbitrarily and allowed everyone to grow to their full potential.

I considered Rahul a friend rather than a leading business icon. We met socially and got to know each other's families. We attended several family functions of each other. I travelled with Rahul on several CII delegations that went to the USA, UK, and Russia. I will never forget the only trip I made to Davos and the time spent with him. In 1997 when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Rahul gave me valuable advice and helped allay many of my concerns. It was in his nature to help others. I cannot believe that a person who was so full of the joy of living is no more. My deepest condolences to his family. I, and a host of others, will always remember him with great fondness. Bon Voyage and may God be with you as always.
