Rahim Al-Hussaini has been appointed as the new Aga Khan, succeeding his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, as the 50th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community. His appointment was confirmed on Wednesday, just a day after his father’s passing in Portugal on Tuesday.

The Aga Khan V: A New Era Begins

Designated as the Aga Khan V in his father's will, Rahim Al-Hussaini now assumes the spiritual leadership of millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide. His appointment marks the continuation of a legacy that spans over a millennium. The Aga Khan is considered by his followers to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, and his role is akin to that of a head of state within the community.

The Ismaili Muslim community and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) confirmed the passing of Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, who had served as the 49th hereditary imam. The statement noted that the late Aga Khan "died surrounded by his family," and it was announced that his burial and will-reading would take place in the coming days, followed by an homage ceremony.

A Legacy of Leadership and Philanthropy

Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, the late Aga Khan IV, was known for his steadfast leadership and the legacy he leaves behind. He was given the title of "His Highness" by Queen Elizabeth II in July 1957, shortly after his grandfather, Aga Khan III, unexpectedly named him heir to the Ismaili Muslim sect. The late Aga Khan was widely respected as a defender of Islamic culture and values. He was a builder of bridges between Muslim societies and the West, often avoiding political involvement to focus on his spiritual and philanthropic duties.

Under his leadership, the Aga Khan Development Network became a globally recognised organisation. The AKDN operates in more than 30 countries, focusing on healthcare, education, housing, and rural economic development. The network’s annual budget of approximately USD 1 billion supports various nonprofit development activities aimed at improving the quality of life in regions that require assistance.

The Ismaili Community: Global Reach and Responsibility

The Ismaili community, which has deep historical roots in regions such as Iran, Syria, and South Asia, has since spread across the globe. Ismailis can now be found in East Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East, as well as in Europe, North America, and Australia. Despite these widespread communities, Ismailis remain united by their religious commitment, with a duty to contribute a tithe of up to 12.5% of their income to the Aga Khan, who is viewed as their spiritual steward.

As preparations are underway for the reading of his will and his burial, the Ismaili community is also preparing for a ceremony to pay homage to the late Aga Khan. This will serve as an opportunity for followers to reflect on his life, leadership, and the significant impact he had on the Ismaili faith and global society.
