Foreign ministers of the Quad - the grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the United States - are planning to meet in early July in Washington amid the changing geopolitics in South Asia and China's looming presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting to be hosted by the United States will firm up the agenda for the Quad summit which will be hosted by India later this year, according to people familiar with the matter. India has been focusing on maritime security and disaster management as part of its agenda for the Quad.

The foreign ministers' meeting is being organised in the backdrop of developments in the Indo-Pacific region following US defence secretary Pete Hegseth's recent remarks against China which drew a sharp reaction from the Xi Jinping regime. China protested to the US over "vilifying" remarks made by Hegseth, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Sunday.
