Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to visit India by the end of this year, according to a report by the Interfax news agency citing Indian National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval.

Doval’s Moscow visit comes amid the growing tensions between USA and India as Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on New Delhi for its Russian oil buys.

ET had, in July, reported that India is expected to host Putin as part of the annual India-Russia bilateral summit later this year. It will be the Russian President's first trip to India since December 2021.

PM Modi and Putin are also likely to meet during the SCO Summit in China. However, details still remain unclear.

The two leaders last spoke ahead of Operation Sindoor, where the Russian leader backed India's counter-terror measures. Russian platforms like the S-400 missile defence system and Indo-Russian BrahMos joint venture played a significant role in neutralising Pakistani military assets, largely of Chinese origin.

At the India-Russia summit, food security may also feature prominently. Putin recently said that, following Modi's request, Russia increased fertiliser exports to India.

Other key areas of discussion may include: Expanding Indian presence in the resource-rich Arctic region and finalising a second site for a Russian-built nuclear power plant.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet in the coming days, in what would be the first summit between leaders of the two countries since 2021.

"At the suggestion of the American side, an agreement was essentially reached to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days, that is, a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump," Ushakov said. "We are now beginning concrete preparations together with our American colleagues," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

Note: The report has been corrected to end of 2025 from previous report claiming end of August.
