Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed concern over reports that the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin had been targeted, calling for restraint and a renewed focus on diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

In a post on X, Modi said, “Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them.”

The comments came amid sharply conflicting claims by Russia and Ukraine over an alleged drone attack on a Russian presidential residence in the Novgorod region. Moscow has accused Kyiv of attempting to strike Putin’s residence, a charge Ukraine has categorically denied.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed the Russian allegations as “another round of lies.” Speaking to reporters via WhatsApp, Zelenskiy said Russia was using such claims to undermine progress made in Ukraine–U.S. peace talks. He also alleged that Moscow was laying the groundwork for potential strikes on Ukrainian government buildings in Kyiv.

Zelenskiy urged U.S. President Donald Trump to respond to what he described as Russian threats.

According to the Kremlin, President Putin discussed the issue directly with Trump in a phone call on Monday. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said Putin informed Trump about what Moscow described as a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian presidential residence and told him that Russia would review its position in ongoing peace negotiations as a result.

Putin was also briefed by Trump and his senior advisers on the state of negotiations with Ukraine during the call, Ushakov said.

Russia has claimed that as many as 91 drones were involved in the alleged attack. Ukraine has rejected this account, reiterating that the allegations are false and accusing Moscow of attempting to derail diplomatic efforts.

The developments add a fresh layer of tension to already fragile peace efforts, with international leaders, including Modi, stressing the need to prioritise diplomacy and avoid actions that could further inflame the conflict.
