Maharashtra's Pune district is set to receive more rainfall throughout the week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department has forecast generally cloudy skies along with light to moderate rain in the city until Thursday. However, rainfall may decrease by the weekend, it said. The forecast till Sunday said, "Partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy sky towards afternoon or evening. Light rain very likely."

IMD issues orange alert in Pune, other parts of Maharashtra

The ghat section of western Maharashtra received an orange alert. The areas include Pune, Kolhapur and Satara. Further, a red alert has been issued for Raigad for Monday.

Orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall, while red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall.

"The cyclonic circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal off north Coastal Andhra Pradesh coast at 5.8km above mean sea level has merged with the above cyclonic circulation. The upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada now lies over South Madhya Maharashtra and neighbourhood and extends up to 7.6km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. Under its influence, the rainfall activity over Maharashtra is likely to continue during June 15-18," the weather department said.

According to IMD officials, the advancement of the monsoon is likely this week, covering the entire state. "Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon over some parts of Gujarat, some more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha during the next 24 hours; over some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and east Uttar Pradesh during the subsequent three days," the forecast said.

Shivajinagar recorded the season's highest rainfall of 55 mm on Friday evening as thundershowers and lightning lashed the city, leading to waterlogging and severe traffic snarls across multiple areas.
