The incident, which occurred on Sunday, triggered panic in the area. The old iron bridge suddenly gave way while several people were walking or standing on it. The spot falls under the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government will provide Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
He also assured that the government will bear the medical expenses of those injured.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic bridge collapse over the Indrayani River near Talegaon, Indori in Pune," the CM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
CM Fadnavis said that he remains in constant touch with the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Police Commissioner, and Tehsildar.
Officials said that heavy rainfall in the region had led to a rise in river levels.
Local police, fire brigade, and NDRF teams rushed to the site and launched swift rescue operations.
