Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government has asked public prosecutors to initiate steps to expeditiously dispose the existing cases against the Gorkha people pending with the foreigners’ tribunal.

Sarma dedicated a 14 KM road from Tupia to Balijuri at Sootea Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Sarma called upon the people to maintain peace and harmony in the area.

The Chief Minister also said that the present government within three months in power, took three important decisions which led to respect and dignity to the people belonging to Gorkha community. The Gorkha people living in tribal belt and block have been declared ‘protected class’. As a result the Gorkha people would be entitled to land rights along with other rights. Moreover, the State government has also decided to take steps so that no case can be filed in foreigners’ tribunal against the Gorkha people. Moreover, the government has asked public prosecutors to initiate steps to expeditiously dispose the existing cases against the Gorkha people pending with the foreigners’ tribunal.


This decision has ended the uncertainty looming before the Gorkhas. The Chief Minister also said that his government would take steps to safeguard language, literature, customs and traditions of the Gorkhas. He at the same time asked the Gorkha people to stay away from the propaganda of certain political parties.
