A protest broke out in Assam after a former student leader was allegedly shot by police in Nagaon. The Assam government has ordered a probe.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Additional Chief Secretary Paban Borthakur will submit a report within seven days.

The protest saw students blocking a highway and raising slogans against the Assam police and Nagaon SP Anand Mishra for "brutality" against the former student leader. Police alleged that the youth, who has been identified as Kirtti Kamal Bora, was involved in drug peddling.

"My son was innocent. He has not done anything wrong, then why did policemen shoot him. I want justice for my son," the mother of the student leader added.
