Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Jammu on Tuesday to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 30500 crore.

The PM will attend a public event at Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of the projects related to health, education, rail, road, aviation, petroleum, and civic infrastructure. The PM will also distribute appointment orders to about 1500 new recruits in the J&K administration, besides interacting with beneficiaries of various government schemes as part of the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu’ programme.

As per the official statement from Prime Minister’s Office, he will inaugurate projects worth Rs 13,375 crore in education sector including permanent campus of IIT Bhilai, IIT Tirupati, IIT Jammu, IIITDM Kancheepuram, Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) Kanpur and two campuses of Central Sanskrit University – at Devprayag (Uttarakhand) and at Agartala (Tripura). The PM will also inaugurate AIIMS Jammu, whose foundational stone was also laid by him in February 2019 and will also lay the foundation stone for a new terminal building at Jammu Airport.

Modi will dedicate to the nation various rail projects in J&K including the new 48km rail line between Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan and the newly electrified 185.66 kns long Baramulla-Sringar-Banihal-Sangaldan section. He will also flag off the first Electric Train in the Valley and also train service between Sangaldan station and Baramulla station.

He will also lay the foundation stone of several road projects including two packages of 44.22 Km of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway connecting Jammu to Katra and phase two for four-laning of Srinagar Ring Road. The PM will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several development projects worth more than Rs 3150 crore for strengthening the civic infrastructure and provisioning of public facilities across J&K.

The PM’s visit to Jammu is a shot in the arm for the BJP cadre as they are facing increasing criticism from their electoral base. Modi had visited Jammu in 2022 and the last such visit to the Valley was in May 2019, two months before the abrogation of Article 370 in August that year. The visit will also formally sound the poll bugle for the BJP in J&K.

The BJP had won two Lok Sabha seats from Jammu in the last general elections. In this election, following the redrawing of the boundaries of Anantnag-Poonch-Rajouri Lok Sabha seats, the BJP is striving to lay its claim on this seat as well. The recent decision to include Paharis in the Schedule Tribe category was also aimed to woo the voters in this Lok Sabha constituency.
