The court will pronounce the quantum of the punishment on Monday.
Justice Anirban Das of Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court said Roy has been found guilty under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Sections 63, 64 and 103, where the highest punishment will be death sentence while the lowest may be life imprisonment.
The verdict was based on forensic evidence presented by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), including the discovery of Roy's DNA on the victim's body.
Section 64 is for rape, Sections 66 for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim, and Section 103(1) is for murder.
The deceased victim's parents were present in court during the closed-door proceedings.
"We had faith in the court and justice will be delivered to Abhaya. We thank the court and hold the verdict in great esteem," the victim's father said. "Roy has not been able to prove that he has not done the crime during the trial. We want the highest punishment and in this highest punishment is the death sentence. We know we will not get our daughter back."
The CBI's advocate said the judgement will be uploaded through e-court on Monday after the pronouncement of the punishment. "We have produced all electronic and scientific evidence to the court," he said.
"Our probe will continue in this case even after the verdict is pronounced. We will pray for the highest punishment," the advocate told ET.
Defence lawyers said they hold the judgement in great respect.
Sources said Roy's lawyers are likely to move to a higher court, opposing the punishment. Before pronouncing the judgement, Justice Das said the safety and security of Roy was of utmost importance. The court complex was cordoned off with 300 security personnel deployed, amid sloganeering by people outside.
