Comic Munawar Faruqui denied permission by cops for Delhi show

Delhi Police have denied stand-up comic Munawar Faruqui permission to perform in Central Delhi in order to maintain communal harmony. The decision comes days after VHP requested the Police to deny permission.

Officials say a central district report showed that the comedy show - scheduled to be held at Delhi's Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium - might affect communal harmony in the vicinity.

According to one officer, the August 28 show had been given permission with the caveat that if the licencing unit of the Delhi Police feels communal harmony may be affected, the show will be denied.


The state president of the right wing organisation, Surendra Kumar Gupta, on Thursday wrote a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner urging him not to give permission to Faruqui's show.

Gupta asked the cops to shut down the show or be prepared for protests by the workers of the VHP and Bajeang Dal.

According to the letter from the VHP leader, Faruqui's show mocks Hindu gods and goddess and would undoubtedly fracture communal harmony, like it did in Hyderabad.
