PM-SETU scheme to upgrade 48 Karnataka ITIs with Rs 241 crore

Bengaluru: The Centre, Karnataka government and industry will invest a combined Rs 241 crore to upgrade 48 government industrial training institutes (ITIs) in the state under the PM-SETU scheme, industries minister MB Patil said on Friday.

The Union government will contribute Rs 112 crore, the state Rs 98 crore and the industrial sector Rs 31 crore towards the initiative, Patil said at a meeting with industry representatives to discuss their participation in the scheme, industries department said in a statement.

The PM-SETU scheme will follow a hub-and-spoke model, with four ITIs attached to each of 12 hubs. One hub each has been selected in Bengaluru Urban and Kalaburagi districts, and Patil called on industries in the two regions to participate actively in the programme.


In Bengaluru Urban, Peenya ITI has been designated as the hub, with ITIs at Tumakuru Road, Domlur, Hosur Road and Devanahalli serving as spoke institutions.

In Kalaburagi, the government ITI for boys will serve as the hub, while ITIs at Sedam, Afzalpur, Jewargi and the government ITI for women in Kalaburagi will function as spokes.

An SPV will be constituted to implement the scheme, with six industry representatives as members. Companies' CSR divisions, foundations and other such entities can also participate, Patil said.

Companies with an annual turnover of at least Rs 500 crore and more than 1,000 employees will be eligible to participate in the scheme.

Industry participation will allow companies to help design curricula, training programmes and the broader skill-development framework based on their workforce requirements, Patil said.

Skill development minister Sharan Prakash Patil said the state has 270 government ITIs and that industries would be allowed to adopt these institutes if they come forward to do so.

Representatives from Boeing, Biocon, Jindal, Toyota, Lenskart, Autoliv, Centum and NTTF attended the meeting.

Karnataka skill development authority chairman EV Raman Reddy, industries department principal secretary S Selvakumar, skill development department secretary Subodh Yadav, industries department commissioner Khushboo Goel and industrial training department commissioner Shilpa were also present.
