PM Narendra Modi highlights Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in Andaman in 'Mann Ki Baat'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that 'Samudrika Naval Marine Museum' in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one of the places that attract people interested in Navy-related tourism.

In the 128th episode of his programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi also highlighted key institutions that showcase India's maritime heritage.

"For those interested in Navy-related tourism, there are many places in our country where they can learn a lot. The Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in Sri Vijaya Puram, formerly known as Port Blair, is known for showcasing the rich history of the region," the Prime Minister said.




Managed by the Indian Navy, the Samudrika museum which offers a comprehensive understanding of the region's oceanic environment has been a central attraction for tourists, researchers and students.

Historians say that Andaman and Nicobar Islands were used as a strategic naval base by the 11th century Chola emperor, Rajendra I, to carry out an attack on Srivijaya (now known as Indonesia).

The Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in Port Blair features five galleries on marine biodiversity, local tribes/culture, naval history, and its geography.

The central government on September 13 renamed Port Blair to "Sri Vijaya Puram" considering its relevance.
