JD Vance calls PM Modi, discusses India-US ties

US Vice President JD Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and discussed ways to deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas, as tensions continue in West Asia.

During the conversation, Modi also congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha on the birth of their son and conveyed his best wishes to the family.


Vance’s call came days after Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a mutual defence pact. The agreement was widely seen as a reflection of a new regional alignment amid the West Asia conflict.

“Received a phone call from US Vice President JD Vance. We discussed ways to further deepen India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas,” Modi said on social media.

“Warmly congratulated him and the Second Lady on the birth of their son and conveyed best wishes to the entire family,” he said.

The American side has not yet provided details of the conversation. It is also not immediately known whether the proposed India-US trade agreement figured in the talks.

Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump, during their meeting in France in June, had instructed officials to work towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful trade agreement at the earliest.

India-US relations had witnessed a downturn after Washington imposed punitive tariffs on India last year. Ties also came under strain following Trump’s claims about his role in de-escalating the India-Pakistan military clashes in May 2025.

Trump repeatedly claimed that he had helped resolve the military conflict between India and Pakistan and prevented it from escalating into a full-scale war.

New Delhi rejected those claims and maintained that the cessation of hostilities resulted from direct talks between India and Pakistan and that the US had no role in it.

Washington’s changes to its immigration policy and its decision to increase the H1B visa fee also contributed to strains in bilateral ties.

However, India and the US have made efforts in recent months to improve relations and have moved forward with negotiations aimed at finalising a trade agreement.
