PM Modi to visit China on August 31 in first trip since 2020 Galwan Valley clash

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake an official visit to China on August 31, marking his first trip to the country since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes along the Line of Actual Control.

ET had first reported on July 15 that the Prime Minister was expected to visit Japan in late August for the annual summit, followed by a trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in early September.

The visits come amid ongoing efforts by both New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise strained bilateral ties.


Modi's upcoming visit to China would be his first trip to the neighbouring country since 2019.

Relations between the two nations soured significantly following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh in June 2020.

A bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely if Modi attends the SCO summit.

The two leaders last met in Kazan during the BRICS summit, where they agreed to initiate a process aimed at stabilising ties.

Modi may also hold talks with other SCO leaders on the sidelines, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, in what would be their first meeting since Kazan.
