Modi and Trump reaffirmed their commitment for a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. They discussed various facets of the wide-ranging bilateral Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and measures to advance it, including in the areas of technology, trade, investment, energy and defence.
The two leaders exchanged views on global issues, including the situation in West Asia and Ukraine, and reiterated their commitment to work together for promoting global peace, prosperity and security.
The leaders agreed to remain in touch and meet soon at an early mutually convenient date.
"Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security," said PM Modi in a post on X.
The United States is India's largest trading partner and two-way trade between the two countries surpassed $118 billion in 2023/24, with India posting a trade surplus of $32 billion.
Modi and Trump are likely to meet as early as mid-February, if Trump travels to Paris for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) summit convened by the French President.
There are also speculations that if Trump does not attend the AI summit, Modi may travel to Washington DC in February for the first meeting between the two leaders.
Sources told ET that no dates have been finalised and all options are being considered in the backdrop of potential tensions over illegal migrants and tariff. A final decision will be arrived at after a few additional meetings with the Trump administration. Modi will attend the AI summit and Trump has been invited for the summit, and the two could meet on the sidelines if Trump attends the summit, hinted sources. President Trump last met Modi in February 2020 in India and the two share an excellent chemistry.
The US President will travel to India later in the year when India hosts the Quad summit.
In 2019, Trump held a 'Howdy Modi' rally with Modi in Houston, drawing 50,000 people, mainly Indian Americans.
India, a strategic partner of the United States in its efforts to counter China, is keen to enhance trade relations with the U.S. and make it easier for its citizens to get skilled worker visas.
