Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet the Myanmar junta chief in Bangkok on the sidelines of the Bimstec summit this week, close on the heels of India's quick response to assist in rescue and relief efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake in the neighbouring country.

"It is hoped that a meeting and discussion with the chairman of the State Administration Council and the Prime Minister of Myanmar will take place soon," said a Myanmar statement after Modi spoke to Gen Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday.

Modi on Saturday dialled the junta chief to extend all possible assistance as Myanmar grappled with its worst earthquake in years. India was the first responder, dispatching several tranches of assistance after the devastating quake. Others which came forward to assist Myanmar included Russia, China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

India on Saturday launched Operation Brahma to aid rescue and relief work, pitching in with tonnes of ration, tents, medicines, sleeping bags, rescue teams and equipment, canine squad and a fully functional field hospital.
