PM Modi arrives in Kyiv for high-stakes talks with Zelenskyy amid Russia tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kyiv, marking a historic and significant diplomatic visit as the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine since its independence in 1991. This visit comes at a critical time, amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and underscores India's firm stance on promoting peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy.

PM Modi Arrival and Key Visits in Kyiv

Upon his arrival at Kyiv Central Station following a 10-hour train journey from Poland, PM Modi was received by Ukrainian officials. His first engagements included a visit to the Ukraine National Museum, where he paid tribute to the children who lost their lives due to the Russian invasion. This museum, which showcases artifacts and documents from major military conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries, highlights Ukraine's struggle for freedom, independence, and cultural identity.


Following this, Modi visited the A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden to pay homage to the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The statue, unveiled in 2020 on Gandhi’s 151st birth anniversary, symbolizes the enduring principles of peace and non-violence that Gandhi stood for, which resonate strongly with India’s stance on global conflicts. Modi’s gesture at the statue reflects India's commitment to these values, particularly in times of war and conflict.

During a press conference in Poland before arriving in Ukraine, PM Modi reiterated India's position on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and other regions, stating, "The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of deep concern for all of us. India firmly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield. The loss of innocent lives in any crisis has become the biggest challenge for the entire humanity. We support dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability. For this, India is ready to provide all possible cooperation along with its friendly countries."

Additionally, Modi engaged with Ukrainian students learning Hindi, emphasizing the strong cultural and educational ties between India and Ukraine. This visit is part of a larger diplomatic effort by India to strengthen ties with Eastern European countries. Modi’s arrival in Kyiv follows his visit to Poland, where he was warmly received by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. "It is after decades that an Indian PM set foot on Polish soil," Modi noted on social media, expressing his appreciation for the hospitality extended by the Polish government. His visit to Poland aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation and explore new opportunities for economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Modi’s trip to Ukraine also comes in the wake of his high-profile visit to Moscow nearly six weeks prior, a visit that drew criticism from the United States and some Western allies. Despite this, India has maintained a neutral stance, refraining from condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and instead advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. "I look forward to the opportunity to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelenskyy on strengthening bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict," Modi said, highlighting the purpose of his visit.
