Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, who is expected to return after a long stay at the International Space Station, conveying his regards and wishing her a safe journey back.

In his letter to Williams, Modi said he had recently met astronaut Mike Massimino where her name and her work came up. That is when he decided to write to her.

"When I met President Trump or President Biden during my visits to the US, I enquired about your well-being... 1.4 billion Indians have always taken pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance. Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission," Modi said.

The Prime Minister added: "After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters."

Referring to her mother Bonnie Pandya, he said she must be keen awaiting her return.

He signed off with regards to her husband Michael and wishes for her fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore for his safe return.
