Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the 15-km Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around Rs 4,900 crore.

The newly inaugurated stretch falls under Corridor 4 of Phase II and has 11 elevated Metro stations. The corridor also features a 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations.

The new stretch is expected to reduce daily travel time for commuters and improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.

Regular passenger services on the stretch will begin at 4 pm on Sunday and run until 9 pm. From October 12, services will operate from 7 am to 9 pm in both directions, with the last train departing at 9 pm from Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani stations. The 11 stations on the stretch include Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani.
