Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pune Metro section from the district court to Swargate on Sunday, marking the completion of Phase-1 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The ceremony, conducted via video conferencing, also saw the foundation stone laid for the extension of the metro line from Swargate to Katraj, which will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,955 crore.

The newly opened underground metro section, costing around Rs 1,810 crore, aims to improve connectivity within Pune. The Swargate-Katraj extension will span 5.46 km and include three underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj.

In addition to the Pune Metro, Modi also inaugurated the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra's Marathwada region. Spanning 7,855 acres, the project is part of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme and is expected to serve as a key economic hub. The total project cost exceeds Rs 6,400 crore, with development planned in three phases.

Another major infrastructure project launched was the revamped Solapur airport. The upgraded facility is designed to handle approximately 4.1 lakh passengers annually, improving connectivity for business and tourism in the region.

During the event, Modi also laid the foundation stone for a memorial at Bhidewada, where social reformer Savitribai Phule established India’s first school for girls. The memorial will honor her contributions to education and social reform.

These projects reflect the government’s focus on boosting infrastructure and connectivity in Maharashtra, particularly in the poll-bound state, where development is a key agenda.

The prime minister was to launch most of these projects from Pune in the poll-bound state a few days ago but his visit was cancelled due to massive rains.
