Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Wednesday conferred with The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the West African nation’s national honour.

The award was presented by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in recognition of Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.”

This honour marks a key moment in Modi’s state visit to Ghana, the first by an Indian prime minister in over thirty years. It is also the first leg of his five-nation tour aimed at deepening India’s global partnerships.

“Honoured to be conferred with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana',” Modi said in a post on X.

“I humbly accept the award on behalf of the 140 crore Indians,” PM Modi said during his acceptance speech.

He dedicated the award to “the aspirations and bright future of the youth of the two countries, their rich cultural traditions and diversity, and the historical ties between Ghana and India.”

“This honour is also a responsibility; to keep working towards stronger India-Ghana friendship. India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner,” Modi added.

The Ministry of External Affairs called the award “a testament to the deep & long-standing India-Ghana ties.” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also posted the statement on X.

In his remarks following the ceremony, Modi said the recognition “further deepens the friendship between the two countries and places new responsibility on him to embrace and advance bilateral ties.”
