Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assessed the areas affected by landslides in Wayanad district. He was briefed about the ongoing evacuation efforts in the aftermath of the monsoon tragedy.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi arrived in Kannur on Air India One, where he was welcomed by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He then headed towards Wayanad by Indian Air Force helicopter, accompanied by Khan, Vijayan, and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi.




Air India One is expected to land at SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta, from where PM Modi will proceed by road to visit areas affected by the landslides.

PM Modi's aerial survey of Wayanad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried out an aerial survey of disaster-hit areas of Wayanad. He scanned the landslide-ravaged Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom hamlets aboard an Indian Air Force helicopter, on which he departed to Wayanad from Kannur Airport around 11.15 am.

After the aerial survey, PM Modi will land at the SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta from where he will proceed to certain landslides-hit areas by road.

In Wayanad, the Prime Minister will receive updates from rescue teams regarding the ongoing evacuation operations. Modi plans to visit a relief camp and a hospital to meet with and converse with the victims and survivors of the landslides.

The landslides, which occurred on July 30, have resulted in the deaths of at least 226 people, with many others still missing, marking one of the most severe natural disasters to affect the southern state of Kerala.

Rahul Gandhi hails PM Modi's Wayanad visit

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi took to X to appreciate PM Modi's incoming Wayanad visit on Friday.

Gandhi thanked PM Modi for deciding to visit Wayanad and said he was confident that the Prime Minister would declare the Wayanad tragedy a national disaster once he sees the extent of the damage in the region.

"Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision. I am confident that once the Prime Minister sees the extent of the devastation firsthand, he will declare it a national disaster," Gandhi wrote on X.

PM's plan of action for Wayanad

The Prime Minister's visit to Wayanad coincides with the Kerala government's request for Rs 2,000 crore in aid for rehabilitation and relief efforts in the affected region.

Furthermore, PM Modi will chair a review meeting to receive a detailed briefing on the disaster and the ongoing relief efforts following his visit.
