PM Modi welcomes US-Iran understanding, hopes for peace in West Asia
In a post on X, Modi said the conflict had caused significant economic disruption globally and led to loss of life across multiple countries.
"I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries," the Prime Minister said.
Modi said India hoped the implementation of the understanding would contribute to regional stability and safeguard global trade routes.
"India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce," he said.
The Prime Minister also expressed hope that discussions on unresolved matters would culminate in a durable agreement.
"We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement," Modi said.
Announcing the agreement, US President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social that a deal with Iran had been concluded and signalled the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic.
In a subsequent post, Trump described the agreement as a landmark diplomatic breakthrough for the region.
"Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me."
"The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace," he added.
Trump said the agreement would be formally signed on Friday and linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to mine-clearing efforts in the strategic waterway.
"With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!" he said.
The US President, however, did not disclose details of the agreement, and the White House did not immediately release any official text.
Trump's posts also did not address longstanding issues between Washington and Tehran, including Iran's nuclear programme and US sanctions on the country.
His statements nevertheless indicated that restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and facilitating commercial shipping form a key part of the agreement.
