PM Modi speaks to Captain Smit Machchhar’s wife and parents, lauds his bravery
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the brave act of Captain Smit Machchhar, who fought and prevented his co-pilot from hijacking the Flydubai aircraft, saving the lives of 170 passengers and crew on Thursday, and underlined that he stopped a 9/11 like attack from taking place.

Addressing bureaucrats at the centenary celebrations of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) here, the prime minister praised Captain Machchhar for his act without fearing for his life.

"The incident that took place yesterday and the manner in which India's Captain Smit displayed patience, wisdom and courage... and as the Israeli prime minister said 'an Indian has prevented another 9/11 like tragedy from happening'... Smit's heroism fills every citizen with pride."

Modi said he spoke to Captain Machchhar's parents and wife and the whole nation is praying for his quick recovery.

"Today, I spoke with his father, Bhupendra Bhai, his mother, Geeta Bhabhi, and his wife, Sonal. He is undergoing treatment, and the entire world is proud of him. I urge our countrymen to pray for Smit's long life and good health, and to congratulate brother Smit, who has brought glory to India," the prime minister said.

Modi also put out a post stating, "Captain Smit Machchhar has shown the world the highest form of courage. Without fearing for his own life, he fought valiantly and prevented another 9/11 like attack from happening. 140 crore Indians salute Captain Smit and are praying for his well-being."

Soon after the incident came to light, Modi described Captain Smit as a "hero". "In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert(ed) a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar. Praying for his speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health." Prayers were held in several prominent temples in India, including at Somnath and Kashi Vishwanath, for Captain Smit's good health.
