Plea in Supreme Court seeks action against those calling for boycott of Muslims

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking action against those calling for social and economic boycott of Muslims following the recent violence in Nuh district of Haryana.

The plea was mentioned by senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Tuesday before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud. The senior lawyer said that an urgent petition is being filed keeping in view calls being made where individuals have been asked to label those who employ people from a specific community as "gaddars" (traitors).

The plea, filed by Shaheen Abdulla, relies on a video of August 2 that had surfaced on social media. The petitioner has argued that in the video, supporters of right-wing Hindu group Samhast Hindu Samaj can be seen walking through a neighbourhood in Hisar, Haryana in the presence of police officials, issuing warnings to residents and shopkeepers that if they continue to employ/keep any Muslim, then people will boycott their shops.


The petitioner said such calls not only "demonise communities and openly call for violence" but will also "inevitably lead to communal disharmony and violence" across the country.

The plea sought directions to the state government and district authorities to ensure that such instances of hate speech are not allowed.
