PIL in HC over rape-death case involving Trinamool leader's son

A Public Interest Litigation was filed in the Calcutta high court over with the death and hurried cremation of a minor girl, allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party by a Trinamool panchayat member's son and his acquaintances at Hanskhali in West Bengal's Nadia district

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar too sought urgent response from the Bengal government on the alleged gangrape and death.

Her death has further stoked debates over police inaction and political intimidation in West Bengal, turning the heat on the state administration that has already seen a raft of court-mandated federal agency probes into recent incidents of death and violence.


The victim's family claimed that the main accused, who has been arrested, had invited the girl to attend his birthday party, following which she was allegedly gangraped. The girl bled profusely after returning home and died before she could be hospitalized.

The body was cremated allegedly without a death certificate by some locals, sources told ET. The village doctor, who prescribed medicine to the girl's mother, was also arrested Monday. Some sections in the village claimed that the girl had a relationship with the Trinamool leader's son.
