‘People’s welfare first’: Russia’s Alipov praises India’s BRICS presidency ahead of Putin visit

New Delhi: India's BRICS Presidency focus on people-centred approach, built on the principle of "people's welfare first" deserves special appreciation, Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, told ET on Wednesday ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit and President Vladimir Putin's second India trip in less than a year's time.

"With the support of Russia and all member states, India's chairship this year has succeeded in taking forward the multilateral dialogue across all three traditional baskets: politics and security, economy and finance as well as humanitarian ties. We expect the leaders to focus on reforming institutions of global governance, countering terrorism, and on security in ICTs, alongside a review of trade and investment cooperation and the growing share of national currencies in mutual settlements. Energy, healthcare, AI, science and innovation are also feature points," Alipov pointed out referring to the BRICS Summit agenda.

The grouping's most important role today was to ensure that the genuine interests of Global South and East countries are properly reflected in decisions that shape world politics and the global economy, the senior diplomat noted.


Alipov noted that the President's visit would be another landmark and multi-dimensional visit.

"Following the outcome of the bilateral summit in December last year in New Delhi, we will expand and diversify our trade to reach target of $100 billion by 2030... We also expect early progress on initiatives such as a potential joint venture for urea production, licensed manufacturing of Russian regional aircraft SJ-100, and in the nuclear energy domain."
