Tractors helped passengers reach the terminal of the Bengaluru airport late on Monday night as a heavy rain caused waterlogging along the approach roads.

Videos tweeted out by journalists and other users showed people clamber onto tractors with their luggage at the last stretch to the airport before they jetted out to international destinations.

The pickup and drop points at the Kempegowda International Airport ( KIAL) were flooded, and the tractors had to be pressed into service as the cabs were stranded and some of them did not even start.

"Heavy rain batters north Bengaluru. Airport road flooded. Arrival and departure areas are also flooded. Passengers take a tractor ride to catch the flight!" tweeted senior journalist DP Satish.

Pumping machines were pressed to flush out water, and the situation was however brought under control by the authorities past midnight

"The police department, along with airport authorities at KIAL, helped to clear waterlogging and also facilitated the traffic near toll gates till late in the night as traffic was delayed for two to three hours, " IANS quoted CK Baba, DCP (North East Division) as saying.

By early morning, citizens tweeted out happier pictures of a clear road and taxis waiting at the airport.

Reports quoting sources said the waterlogging occurred due to the ongoing work of Namma Metro and other developmental activities on the premises of KIAL.

The heavy rain also disrupted normal life in the city too, with water entering many houses. A resident of KP Agrahara, died of electrocution after his house was flooded.
