Part of Ashram Road to be closed permanently from December. Read why
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to close a 750-meter stretch of Ashram Road in December to make way for two important projects: the Vadaj Ramdevpir Tekra slum rehabilitation project and the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Deve...

In response to the impending closure of Ashram Road, an 18-meter-wide road is being created adjacent to Cargo Motors. This new route will be seamlessly linked to a proposed 24-meter-wide road via the Prabodh Raval bridge, eventually connecting it to the 132ft Ring Road.
Furthermore, the road on the west bank of the Sabarmati riverfront will directly connect to a 24-meter road through Ramapir Tekra, providing direct access to the main Ranip GSRTC bus stand. The ongoing land reclamation along the Chandrabagha drain will play a crucial role in facilitating these infrastructural developments.
Under the Gandhi Ashram development plan, AMC has greenlit several projects, including a water supply distribution network valued at Rs 29.28 crore, a sewer network costing Rs 12.21 crore, and a stormwater disposal network with a budget of Rs 28.62 crore. The plan also incorporates a Chandrabhaga natural drain network worth Rs 51.43 crore, which will transform a sewage water-carrying drain into a waterbody.
Additionally, there are road projects worth Rs 48.70 crore and a street lighting renovation project costing Rs 16.38 crore included in this initiative.
"A senior official in the west zone stated, 'The entire 55-acre area will witness road projects worth Rs 48.70 crore and street lighting renovations worth Rs 16.38 crore.'"
In addition to the closure of Ashram Road, AMC is devising plans to establish a new road network for the Vadaj slum rehabilitation and Gandhi Ashram rehabilitation projects.
This endeavor encompasses a new road near the Khadi Gramodyog and a road constructed over the drain from Mehsana Society.
Senior officials in the civic body have revealed that the Town Planning Scheme T for the area is also undergoing revisions, with more than ten new internal routes planned for both the Gandhi Ashram precinct and Vadaj slum redevelopment projects.
Deputy municipal commissioner I K Patel expressed the commitment of AMC, stating, "We are dedicated to enhancing the infrastructure in Vadaj, and these new road networks will significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity in the area."
