Parliament: CEC Gyanesh Kumar impeachment motion fails to qualify
Parliament has rejected motions seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after notices signed by 193 Opposition MPs failed to gain admission in both Houses. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan declined the motions submitted on March 12, 2026, invoking Article 324(5) of the Constitution. The Opposition alleged “partisan and discriminatory conduct,” obstruction of electoral investigations, and disenfranchisement of voters. Both presiding officers cited a “careful and objective assessment” but did not disclose detailed reasons. The rejection halts the process at the preliminary stage, as no inquiry can proceed without admission under the constitutional framework governing the Election Commission of India.
