Pakistan a regime of army, by army and for army: India

New Delhi: India on Saturday issued a strong response to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, and warned that continued support to cross-border terrorism "will have consequences."

Exercising India's right to reply, diplomat Petal Gahlot called Sharif's remarks "bizarre" and reminded the assembly that Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the 9/11 attacks, was living in Pakistan.

"The US just observed the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Its mastermind was living at the doorsteps of Pakistan's army's premier academy," Gahlot said.

Calling out Pakistan's hypocrisy on terrorism, she alleged that the country "claims to uphold security by day and perpetrates terrorism by night."

In his UNGA address, Sharif had raised the Kashmir issue, saying a "just and fair solution" was required to ensure South Asia does not have another conflict similar to the one in 2025 - when India launched Operation Sindoor following a terror attack in Pahalgam.

"Pakistan is the regime of the army, for the army and by the army. Their puppets may change, but the army continues to call the shots," Gahlot said.

Warning Pakistan against continued support for terrorism, she said, "We demonstrated last year that terrorists will have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Our right to defend ourselves against terrorism will be exercised. And continued terrorism by Pakistan will have consequences."

Besides Kashmir, Sharif also spoke about the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which India has put in abeyance until Pakistan ends its support for cross-border and other forms of terrorism.

Jaishankar and Lavrov discuss annual summit, global issues

External affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov held wide-ranging discussions in New York on a slew of issues, including the annual summit later this year and global developments such as the Ukraine crisis and the situation in West Asia.

The ministers discussed key issues of Russian-Indian cooperation, the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts, and current regional and global issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the situation in West Asia, according to a Russian foreign ministry readout.
