Pace of construction of rural houses slowed under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin: Minister

Covid-19 pandemic induced nation-wide lockdown has retarded the pace of construction of rural houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, minister of state for rural development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said in response to a question in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Only 57.4% of the targeted houses have been completed till date.

“Besides, the delays are also due to cases of unwillingness of beneficiaries, migration, death of beneficiaries without legal heir, delay in allotment of land to landless beneficiaries by the states/UTs and general, assembly or panchayat elections,” the minister said.

According to the data by the rural development ministry, out of the allocated target of 2.63 crore till financial year 2021-22, only 1.51 crore houses have been constructed including 33.9 lakh houses built during 2020-21.


The government had in 2016 said it will provide assistance to eligible rural households for construction of 2.95 crore pucca houses with basic amenities to achieve the objective of “Housing for All”.

According to the minister, the states and union territories have been requested to expedite the completion of houses approved under PMAY-G. “Other steps taken include timely allocation of targets to the states and UTs under PMAY-G, provision of adequate funds and promotion of eco-friendly and innovative technologies for house construction,” the minister said.

“The ministry follows up with the states to ensure provision of land to landless beneficiaries in rural areas and ensure expeditious resolution of technical issues faced by the state,” the minister added.

The rural development ministry has issued an advisory to all states and UTs to resume activities under PMAY-G with due Covid-19 protocol and undertakes regular review of progress to ensure timely completion of targeted houses, said the rural development ministry response.
