Over 6 crore voters deleted in SIR phase 3; Delhi sees highest cut at 32.7%

New Delhi: Over 6.1 crore voters have been deleted under the Special Intensive Revision (Phase 3) so far, with Delhi and Maharashtra reporting sharp cuts in their draft electoral rolls published on Monday.

After the final roll publication, the total number of elector names struck off in the first three phases of SIR will go well over 10-11 crore. Over 5 crore names net deletions were effected in the first two phases of SIR.

The national capital has seen 47.56 lakh names struck off the draft electoral roll, marking a 32.7% deletion rate, the highest so far among draft rolls published across states and Union Territories.


Maharashtra, which also published its draft roll on Monday, recorded 2.07 crore deletions from its 9.78-crore-strong pre-SIR electoral roll, registering a 21.16% deletion rate. In terms of numbers, this is the highest number of deletions in any state/UT so far under SIR. As many as 1.54 crore names, or 15.7%, were deleted due to absence/shifting, while 34 lakh persons were found to be dead, according to the Election Commission of India data.

With the latest round, only Tripura and Nagaland remain to publish their draft rolls under SIR Phase 3.

Delhi's electoral roll, on the other hand, now stands at 97.53 lakh, compared with 1.45 crore voters before the SIR, with nearly one-third of the voter base deleted.

While 43.32 lakh names have been deleted due to absence/permanent shifting from the address, as many as 2.82 lakh people were found dead, according to ECI data. Another 1.41 lakh people were found enrolled at multiple places in the electoral roll/duplicate entries, resulting in deletion, the data showed.

ECI officials suggested that the high deletion rate was probably due to a "large number of floating population" in the national capital.
