Srinagar: More than 4,000 people involved in the drug trade have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir as part of the ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyan’ (drug free campaign) launched in April, director general of police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.

Addressing participants at the ‘Run for Unity’ in Srinagar, Prabhat said police had registered 3,257 drug-related cases since April 11, when lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign from Jammu. He said that 170 convictions had been secured and more than 2,500 cases had already been disposed of.

“In terms of property attachments, J&K currently ranks number one across India, with 288 properties with a value of Rs 138 crore attached, while Rs 80 lakh cash was also seized,” he said.

The DGP said that 144 accused persons had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the highest number for any state or union territory in the country.

“Police continuously works to foil the nefarious designs of our hostile neighbour through counter-terror operations. The month of September has been a time of immense pride, marked by numerous operational achievements. In addition to counter-terror operations, we have made strong progress in crime prevention, criminal detection and maintaining law and order,” Prabhat said.

"Our youngsters are committed to peace and a bright future. They prefer peace over violence, progress over destruction, and have embarked on a journey from darkness to light,” said Prabhat.

The DGP further said that the youth are taking part in every innovative activity organised by the J&K Police and that their energies are being utilised in a positive way.
