Opposition stalls Lok Sabha on opening day; protests likely to continue

New Delhi: The monsoon session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Monday as opposition protests over a range of issues, including the paper leak, the Ayodhya temple donation theft case and a dispute over a dam across the Cauvery River, disrupted proceedings in the Lok Sabha and a series of four adjournments before the House was adjourned for the day.

Soon after speaker Om Birla completed obituary references at the start of the sitting, opposition members raised their respective issues, entered the well of the House and shouted slogans. After Birla's appeals for order went unheeded, he adjourned the House until noon.

When the House reassembled, the protests continued. Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, adjourned the House until 12.30 pm, then 1 pm and finally 2 pm as members ignored repeated appeals to allow proceedings to continue.


Amid the opposition protests, law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the House to replace an ordinance that increased the strength of the apex court from 34 judges to 38, including the chief justice of India.

With the opposition refusing to relent, the Chair adjourned the House for the day.
