One person arrested in connection with violence during Shillong rally: Sangma

One person was arrested in connection with assault and violence on the passers-by during a rally in Shillong-Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said one person was arrested in connection with assault and violence on passers-by during a rally in Shillong on Friday.

The chief minister warned stern action would be taken against those involved in the violence at the rally taken out against unemployment on Friday.

He said, “One person has been arrested and three FIRs have been lodged in connection with the violence. A large number of people have been identified and necessary action is going to be taken against them.”


On Friday last, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People FKJGP organised a rally in Shillong. The rally was organised to highlight the unemployment problem. The rally moved to the GS Road leading to Khyndailad. Masked volunteers of the FKJGP started assaulting the passers-by. At Dhankheti junction people were beaten up with sticks. Shopkeepers had to put down their shutters as panic gripped the city.

He said, “We have reviewed the entire situation and directed the police to take action. Necessary arrangements and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that need to be made in future were also discussed at a meeting".
