A person was killed and seven others injured in clash between the forest protection personnel and alleged encroachers in Burha Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonitpur district on Monday.

A senior official said that around hundreds of people who were evicted in February had again occupied land. Forest officials were attacked when they went to drive them away from the place. The attackers were armed with sticks and machetes.

He said that situation got tensed and forest officials fired in the air to disperse the mob . One woman was killed. Four forest personnel, including divisional forest officer Jayanta Deka and three civilians from the mob were injured.


He said that encroachers were from Nagaon. In February the administration had evicted around 2,500 families who had been from 2,000 hectares of land.
