Dialogue, debate, democracy: Om Birla praises PM Modi’s note on parliamentary traditions

Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, on Sunday posted on X that a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflects an unwavering commitment to the rules, traditions and ethical values that underpin India’s parliamentary democracy.

Birla thanked the Prime Minister for what he described as an inspiring reaffirmation of democratic ideals and the spirit of public service.

Birla noted that throughout his public life both as Prime Minister and earlier as Chief Minister of Gujarat Modi has consistently upheld faith in parliamentary institutions and democratic procedures. According to the Speaker, the Prime Minister’s message underscores the central role of Parliament as a forum for dialogue, debate and deliberation.

“Every voice raised in Parliament represents the aspirations of millions of citizens,” Birla said, adding that the Prime Minister has always accorded the highest priority to parliamentary functioning and has worked to address issues raised by members through discussion and consensus.



The Speaker further said the message transcends political lines and carries significance for elected representatives across the country, including those in Parliament, state legislatures and local bodies.

He added that such reaffirmations strengthen the ethical foundations of the democratic framework laid down by India’s freedom fighters and members of the Constituent Assembly.

Birla expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for what he called “inspiring words” that reinforce respect for democratic values and institutions.
