Odisha: ASHA worker carries elderly woman on back as Cyclone Dana approaches

As cyclone Dana approached landfall in Odisha, a video showing inspiring act of bravery and compassion by an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker from Khasmunda village in Kendrapara district, surfaced on social media. She is seen walking along a muddy path with an elderly woman on her back. Sibani Mandal carries the her towards a nearby cyclone shelter.

The moment was shared by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in Odisha, recognizing Sibani’s dedication to her community.



“Hats off to our #Narishakti! ASHA worker Sibani Mandal from Khasmunda village in Rajnagar Block, #Kendrapara, #Odisha, evacuated an elderly woman by carrying her to a #Cyclone shelter,” the PIB in Odisha shared on its official X page alongside the video.

Who are ASHA workers?

Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are trained female health workers. They act as a bridge between communities and the public health system.


India's ASHA workers were honoured with WHO Director-General’s Global Health Leaders Award at the 2022 World Health Assembly. The acronym "ASHA" also means "hope" in Hindi.
