Normalisation of India-China ties linked to border peace: Ajit Doval to Wang Yi

New Delhi: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that normalisation of ties over the past year was a direct result of both sides maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas indicating that "the state of the border, to a very large measure, naturally would determine the state of the relations".

"I am happy that over the past year our relationship has been steadily returning to normal. The normalcy in our relationship has been a direct result of both sides maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas," Doval said in his opening remarks during the meeting with Wang.

Both held an in-depth discussion on the boundary question and other bilateral, regional and global issues. They discussed ways to improve overall health of ties across all sectors between the two countries and the Chinese President's upcoming visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit on September 12-13.

The talks also happened in the backdrop of reports of India-China standoff along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh.

Strategic Economic Dialogue could be revived around Xi's visit amid increase in Chinese FDI in India.

Modi and Xi last met in August 2025 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin. Xi last visited India in 2019 before the Galwan crisis rocked ties between the summer of 2020 to autumn 2024. Ties started to improve steadily and slowly after the Xi and PM meeting in Kazan on the margins of the BRICS Summit.

Prior to the SR talks, Doval, who is in Beijing on a two-day visit, also called on Chinese Vice President Han Zhang. The two discussed ways to strengthen peace and tranquillity in the border areas and improve ties across economic, political and multilateral fora, in accordance with the consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries, the Indian Embassy said in a post on X.

Both Doval and Wang are the designated Special Representatives (SR) for the boundary talks mechanism, which was established in 2003 to address the dispute of the India-China border spanning 3,488 km.
