Noida traffic police will soon implement lane driving rules on three major roads to reduce traffic jams. Drivers who violate lane driving rules will be fined Rs 1,500 in the targeted area. Abrupt lane changes during peak traffic hours contribute significantly to congestion and accidents. Traffic police explain that when one vehicle brakes slightly to change lanes, following vehicles tend to brake more abruptly to avoid collisions. This chain reaction often causes traffic to slow down or come to a standstill. Such sudden lane changes also increase the likelihood of sideswipe and rear-end collisions, a TOI report stated.

No Lane Changing Areas

The selected routes include the Charkha roundabout near Amity University, the stretch from Gardens Galleria Mall to Film City, and the bird feeding point near Dalit Prerna Sthal.

The Charkha roundabout on the Noida Expressway faces congestion from traffic merging from residential sectors 125, 126, and 128, as well as vehicles heading towards Kalindi Kunj, Sarita Vihar, and Jamia Nagar. This convergence significantly increases traffic pressure.

Similarly, the bird feeding point near Dalit Prerna Sthal handles vehicles travelling towards the Chilla Border, Film City flyover, Sector 18, and DLF Mall. Drivers frequently change lanes at the last moment, disrupting the traffic flow.

The stretch between Gardens Galleria Mall and Film City serves commuters heading from Botanical Garden, GIP Mall, and Sector 18 towards the Noida Expressway, Greater Noida, Chilla Border, and DND Flyway. This route also sees frequent lane changes, adding to traffic delays.

Lane discipline measures

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav said the identified stretches experience heavy traffic throughout the day, with snarls intensifying during rush hours. “Noida Authority will develop lane-changing zones nearly 500 metres ahead of these points where commuters can switch lanes. Cameras will also be installed to monitor violations and issue challans,” Yadav stated.

Currently, Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras on the expressway do not detect such violations. Officials revealed that efforts are underway to update the system to enable such monitoring.

Future implementation plans

While the exact date for enforcing lane discipline has not been announced, officials indicated that similar measures could be extended to other internal roads if the initiative proves successful.

S Velmurugan, chief scientist at the Central Road Research Institute, provided guidance on lane usage. “On expressways, which have two-three lanes on each arm, the right lane is used for overtaking, the middle one is for cars, and the left is for heavy vehicles,” he explained.
