According to the state government out of 207 reservoirs across the state, water from 64 Reservoirs in Gujarat is kept reserved for drinking water.
Following a cabinet meeting of the state on Wednesday in Gandhinagar, which reviewed the availability of drinking water in Gujarat, Government spokesperson Rishikesh Patel told the media rthat the state government has made robust arrangements to ensure that citizens receive clean and adequate drinking water during the summer season.
He added that water from a total of 64 reservoirs in the state has been reserved specifically for drinking purposes. Currently, against the requirement of 14,895 MCFT of drinking water, a total of 2,23,436 MCFT of water is available in these reservoirs. Moreover, the current situation indicates that a total of 4,39,129 MCFT of water is stored in 207 reservoirs across the state, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam — about 6% more than the previous year.
He further said that presently, drinking water is being supplied to 15,720 villages through group water supply schemes based on surface water sources. The remaining 2,432 villages are receiving drinking water through groundwater-based schemes. Efforts are underway to also include these villages under the group schemes. Thus, all 18,152 villages in the state are receiving an adequate supply of drinking water.
In most major dams from which drinking water is supplied, a sufficient quantity is available until July 15, 2025. After reserving water for drinking purposes in each reservoir, the remaining water is used for irrigation, Patel added.
