The Railways have rubbished the claim of Shiv Sena’s Mumbai MP Arvind Sawant who a day ealier had questioned the delay in the state getting oxygen through Vishakapatnam by rail to Maharashtra.

Railway officials told ET that there was no ‘delay’ deliberate or other wise in bringing the oxygen tankers from Vishakapatnam and said that the Railways worked overtime to get the oxygen tankers to the state.

Unlike other goods, the movement of bringing in liquid medical oxygen tankers in Ro-Ro service is not same. There are restrictions on speed, one has to look at curve of the tracks. Liquid oxygen is cryogenic and hazardous chemical and that the Railways have to map the route so as to ensure that there is no sudden acceleration or deceleration.”said a senior Railway official to ET.

“We also have to consider that the tankers once loaded on the train increases the height which would have issues with over head equipment, tunnels, so only a particular route could have been chosen and we chose the Vishakapatnam via Vasai, Surat, Bhusawal- Nagpur route avoiding Ghat section.”said the official.
